I just love this photo depicting two joyful children indulging in cookies and milk, a common tradition on Christmas Eve (just be sure to leave some for Santa!).
While I rest in the emotion this perfectly curated photo–that captures the spirit of the holiday–elicits, images and memories and thoughts of all that is dark in the world intrude and try to break the spirit of my heart.
In the past, I would readily fall into agreement with this evil spirit and allow it to overcome me. My heart would fall into heaviness.
Deceived to believe that denying and rebuking this spirit would cause a negative form of denial, I allowed it to rest in my heart space and control my thoughts and emotions.
Well, not any more, Satan. You can’t stay here no more!
Because I believe too strongly in God’s word now.
“In the world you will have trouble, but take heart; I have overcome the world” John 16:33
Yes, there are many things that trouble us in this world. Many, many things.
But a pure-hearted relationship with our Lord and Savior helps us remember the protection that surrounds us and equips us to fight the evil lurking around us. So we, too, can experience the joy and wonder of the season without anger or guilt, but with a full heart.
With humility and love,
Michele
